In the Forests of the Night

Want a gripping thriller that will keep you up all night, turning the pages?  There is a deranged serial killer on the loose, targeting poor villagers in the Russian Far East.  Will the intrepid forest ranger stop this predator before he strikes again?  Once I started The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival, by John Vaillant, I had a hard time putting it down - it reads like the best suspense fiction or thrillers.  Meanwhile, you can’t help but root for the killer - a magnificent Amur tiger who is being stalked himself, whose habitat is disappearing, whose numbers are declining.  Even though you know how the book is going to end, there are still plenty of surprises in store.  I was left marveling at the size, strength and intelligence of this animal, who figured out when a particular individual had wronged him and held a grudge until he could take revenge.  The science of the book is sound, the characters (real people!) brave and larger than life.  It was one of those books that I couldn’t stop thinking about after I finished it,and I can’t recommend it enough.

Vaillant’s previous book, The Golden Spruce, has been on my “to read” list for a few years, but somehow, reading about a tree didn’t sound too compelling.  Now I am eager to start it.
