Foster is a popular science fiction writer, and, apparently, a thrill seeking adventurer. He has trekked through Gabon, Papua New Guinea, the Amazon, Australia, India, and countless other exotic locales, not including Zanesville, Ohio. This travel memoir describes Foster’s encounters with a Bengal tiger and other large cats, great white sharks, elephants, poisonous spiders, and other dangerous creatures.
Some of the more entertaining passages are about bugs - mosquitoes, tsetse flies, fire ants and, most notably, the isula ant in southeastern Peru - it can grow to be 2 inches long, has strong jaws, and being stung by one feels the same as being shot. Also, you do NOT want to provoke the tiny, blue-ringed octopus. Trust me.
Foster shows great respect for wildlife and nature, and his descriptions of the national parks in these far flung places made me really want to visit there, especially the ones in Gabon. Sure beats Ohio....
