Are We Rome?: The Fall of an Empire and the Fate of America, by Cullen Murphy argues that ultimately, the US is *not* Rome, but there are enough disturbing parallels between the two empires to cause alarm. From the large, over-committed military to the underfunding of public services to the belief in our own exceptionalism, there is much to worry about, whether you buy the premise or not. One of these days I will read Gibbon’s History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (free on Kindle!) but since volume one alone is 486 pages and there are 6 volumes, this is a daunting task, best saved for when I have more free time and brain power. And who knows when that will be.
