Sometimes Free isn't Such a Good Deal

  Not worth the $0.99.
Amazon.com has frequent deals where particular books (usually the crappy ones) are cheap or almost free.  For $0.99 I could buy Accidents Waiting to Happen by Simon Wood.  (This e-book is also $0.99 at Barnes & Noble.)  Since I like to read mysteries or thrillers, especially when I’m stressed and need to take my mind off something, I figured I’d give it a try.  I mean, 99 cents, right?  So I started it the other day and got 42% of the way in before giving up.  Normally if I start a book I force myself to finish it, no matter how ridiculous the plot and stupid the characters, because I’m stubborn.  But I just don’t care enough.  It had a promising start - someone is apparently trying to kill the lead character and make it look like an accident. But then it went downhill.  We already know why, sort of - something to do with life insurance (evil corporation!) and a psychotic killer for hire.  Meanwhile the psycho bimbo the main character had an affair with is blackmailing him.  Ho hum.  The plot is predictable and the characters are cardboard.  So I’m putting it down and looking for something more compelling.  I can’t believe it got 3.5 stars and a bunch of glowing reviews on Amazon, though it seems like even the worst books get at least 3 stars there.  People must feel more charitable if the books are free/cheap.  I’m feeling especially cranky today so I have to find something really good that I can get lost in.  Maybe a good British mystery or some sci fi.
