Funny as in “peculiar,” not funny as in “ha ha.” This article did not even make front page news in the Seattle Times today. Instead, their front page above-the-fold stories were “Panel unveils redistricting maps,” "Low-tech reef netters haul in best salmon catch in years,” and “Microsoft reinvents Windows for future.” Really? A glorified press release for Windows 8? I guess Microsoft’s bribing their conference attendees with a Samsung tablet PC paid off in free publicity.
“Number in Poverty Hits U.S. Record” did not appear in the Seattle Times (granted, not exactly the country’s newspaper of record) until the bottom of page 4. The New York Times saw fit to put it on the front page (“Poverty Rates Soar to Highest Level Since 1993” in the print edition) and the Washington Post had it front page, above-the-fold, with a picture and everything (print edition). Judging from the number of comments this article attracted in both the Seattle and New York Times, plenty of other people thought it was an important story too. The Seattle Times - what a stupid and provincial newspaper. Then again, this is the same newspaper that endorsed George Bush for president in 2000, so what do you expect?
